Our FIRST SISTER

Please welcome Jean Pennington, our VERY FIRST SISTER at the Sisterhood of Scrap!!
Here is the beautiful layout that Jean created for Week 1 challenge! Congratulations Jean!!! This is YOUR week to inspire!!

Here is a link to her ONLINE GALLERY

And here is her BLOG

Here's more about who she is!!

Home: I live in the country in a little place called Pleasant Hill, Maryland. I live very close to the head of the Chesapeake Bay. We are surrounded by rivers that make for fun water sports all summer long.

Tell us about your family (include your pets!): I will be celebrating twenty years of marriage to my second husband Max on May 1st. He is a hard working man who loves to plan little getaways for us still after twenty years. I am the Mother to three fine young men, and have three beautiful Daughter-in-laws. I will become a grandmother for the first time to a little girl who is due to arrive around July 22 this year to my eldest son and his wife. I have a half Beagle and half black lab named Jack. He is called Jack because he is blind in one eye; hence the name one eyed Jack. I also have a pretty grey cat named Nancy, who is also totally blind since birth she is 14 years old and still looks like a young kitten, though I do notice she is slowing down a little bit more with each passing year. Things can get pretty crazy around here when I move the furniture on them.

Favorite Snack: This is terrible ...chocolate is my very favourite. So much so that I have to stay away from it or it would be all I would eat (more like an addiction then a treat). My next favorite is dark red cherries, especially cold. But do not like the ones that are in jars or canned, only fresh.

Favorite Drink: My favorite drink is coffee. I would drink it all day long so I have to alternate between decafe and regular so I can get some sleep.

Favorite Paper: I am now really just getting into all the beautiful Papers that are out there, but at this stage I would have to say Basic Grey and My Minds Eye. They both use such rich colors. I am sure that my favorites will change as I discover all the beautiful Papers that are available.

Favorite Technique: This is a tough one...so many different techniques to learn and try. Right now I am enjoying learning to be a bit braver with doodling and making my own chipboard elements, but I always find myself using some type of inking...love the look it adds to a page.

Favorite Embellishment: There are some wonderful embellishments on the market...makes it hard to choose..But I would have to say brads and buttons are ones that can be found on almost all my layouts...though chipboard flowers are becoming a fast friend to me.

Favorite Scrap Tool: Would have to say my papertrimmer and Fiskars exacto knife
Favorite Adhesive: Double side adhesive tape and Drybond dry adhesive. Drybond may be found at QVC.
How thick is your cardstock and paper stash? It's now on its way to becoming very thick...I have a budget now for once a month to do some online shopping for supplies. I have hesitated for some time with shopping on line, but with Scrap supplies so limited in my area, I have finally given in and am so happy I have. What great products are available thru the cyber world!

How/Why did you start scrapbooking? I started when my father became ill and passed away within three months of the onset of his illness. I was his primary care giver and needed something to keep me occupied while he rested. I had been working on our family history for many years and thought how nice it would be to add some photos to go along with the history. When Dad passed away I discovered all these wonderful photos that just called for me to do something with...so I picked up my first Scrapbook magazine and gave it a try.

How long have you been scrapbooking? I have been Scrapbooking for three years and have been loving every minute of it.What is it about scrapbooking that you really love? I love that it blends so nicely with my passion for genealogy. Preserving the past has always been so important to me and it gives me a chance to allow my creative side to come thru.

What scrapbook magazines do you read? Any that I can get my hands on...I have a subscription to Scrapbook Etc. and my other favs are Paper Crafts, Paper Creations and Creating Keepsakes.

Where do you get your inspiration? Usually it will start from the photo I want to use...Remembering the moment and what was going on at the time or what it represents to me. When I am stuck I will check out the galleries, magazines or find a sketch that catches my eye...and begin from there.

Do you enjoy other crafts and/or hobbies? I like to embroider, sew, and work in my garden and any small arts and crafts projects that happen to catch my eye. I also have a fondness for taking something old and turning it into a functional altered working piece ...example shutters into a magazine rack...my most recent.

How many hours a week do you scrapbook? I have never really took note of the hours but there can be days when I hardly leave my craft room if I am so inspired…but I would fairly say when ever I have a free moment to create. How long does it take you to complete a layout? Sometimes days and sometimes hours...I spend a lot of time planning and rearranging before adhering...then there are moments that it all just falls into place with out hardly a thought.

What are your favourite colours to scrapbook with? I don't really have a favorite color but I do notice I tend to add red to my layouts a bit.Where do you scrapbook and when? I Scrap at home in my craftroom...though I have attended local crops in my area. My favorite time to scrap is in the morning and later evening hours.

Are you an organized or messy scrapper? I try to stay organized. If I find that I have become surrounded by clutter while I am in the middle of a layout, I will stop and do a quick cleanup...it's like starting with a clean canvas for me.

How do you organize your supplies? hmmm…since I have just recently emptied a bedroom and turned it into my craftroom, I have had to make do with what I can for the time being. I have a double wide closet that I keep bookcases in for storage ...cigar boxes, plastic storage containers and anything I can get my hands on that will make do for storage. Most importantly label...label...label. I try to label everything… makes reaching for a product less time consuming.

Describe your scrap space. Do you like/dislike it? My Scrapspace is a spare bedroom I converted into a craftroom. My desk faces the view to the backyard and woods…very helpful in getting the creative juices flowing. This is also where my computer, tv and treadmill are located. I love my new craftroom and am very thankful to have a space of my own...though in time I would like to have it all be one style. Ikea furniture has some fantastic craft and storage units out there that I would love to have...but not before I finishing doing the remodelling and updating we have been doing to our home...so for now my room suits me just fine.

Anything else you want to share? Just that I am surprised and thrilled to have been chosen to be first sister added to the wonderful world of "Sisterhood of Scrap". The whole concept is so creative.

You will hear more from Jean throughout this week's posts!! Thank-you Jean, we are thrilled to have you as our SISTER this week!!

FOTO Friday - Week 2

If you're like me, you have LOTS of photos of "events" to scrap -- birthday parties, days at the beach, picnics, playing baseball, and so on.

Sometimes, though, it's nice to scrap the "candid" shots - those you take when no one knows you're even around, armed with a camera You can catch your child totally engrossed in play, or staring out the window, dreaming of the day ahead. These sorts of photos look great and you can often add some very thoughtful journaling when you scrap them.

Here's one that I was able to capture today -- my daughter reading a book.

So today, hone your sneaking skills and go snap some candid shots!

TEXT Thursday-Week 2:Make a Journal!

When my sisters and I decided to start this blog I made a journal to keep all my jot notes and important information in. So, I thought it would be great if you could make one too!

Here's the one I made:

Carla has one made too. She has her journal divided into different sections. She is using hers for various sketch ideas, inspiration, page element ideas, titles, and blog thoughts.

If you make one, let us know in the comments section. If you upload it somewhere in a gallery, tell us where we can see it. We'd love to take a look at it! Your journal can be any size, and decorated any way you please!

WEB Wednesday - Week 2

Today we've found a great project for you to get involved in -- Canada's Scrapbooking Crop for Kids. It's an awesome event - the largest scrapbooking event in Canada - and it's for a wonderful cause! During the weekend of October 12-14th, there will be a huge crop held in 6 cities across Canada, with over 2500 scrappers!

Lots of scrapping, classes, contests and FUN, and all the proceeds go to a local children's hospital. What a GREAT cause to support!

Check the website and see if there's one where you live!

Just a quick note....

We were so excited to receive so many entries for our first challenge at "Sisterhood of Scrap". We have chosen our first "sister" and will be making the announcement on Sunday (she will need a few days to do her "homework). LOL!

Thanks, ladies, for your submissions!
If you weren't picked this week, please TRY AGAIN!

Also, at the end of the month, we will be doing a random draw of everyone who completed any of the challenges on our blog. I'll post a pic of the prize sometime tomorrow.

Good luck to all!

TEACHING Tuesday-Week 2

Ribbon!! I love ribbon. And what's better than a piece of ribbon on a layout? A CLUSTER of ribbons! Choose several pieces of ribbon from your stash (I keep a ribbon jar to throw my end pieces in and those work PERFECT for making ribbon clusters!) and add them to your layout. Staple them, sew them, fasten them with a brad, tie them on, whatever...Be creative! It will add a great touch! I'm not much into math but as I see it-Ribbon + Cluster=Ribbon Cluster=Really Cute=Really Cool! hehe! This formula works for me every time!

Here are a couple of examples where I used a ribbon cluster on my layout.

So the next time you are ALMOST done your layout but you feel you need to do something else to "complete" it , remember this very simple formula and add a ribbon cluster! Awesome results every time!

Post a link to your blog in the comments here. We'd love to visit and leave some comments for you :-) If you don't have a blog, leave a comment in this post using the word "memories".

Photo Friday

We are going to trying out our gallery today. We aren't sure if we'll continue with the Bravenet service, but for now it's what we have available :-) You can see the link to the gallery on the left-hand side, below the pictures. We're looking into getting some web space and setting up own own gallery -- hopefully soon!

So... our theme for today is FRIENDSHIP. Post a picture showing a special friendship -- doesn't have to be sisters. Friendship is so important; I think we all need at least ONE special friend in a lifetime!

A few notes about how to upload:
- Click on the Bravenet link, below our pictures, "view my photo gallery"
- Click "upload new photo"
- Enter the number of photos and then click "next"
- Brownse to find your photo and put the title
- DON'T put your email address (just add your name instead) We are working on how to change that part of the process.
- Click "next" to upload your photo
- Photo will be approved by an administrator (me or one of my sisters) before you can view it in the gallery

So, let's give it a try :-) Deanne and I already have a photo uploaded. If you want to tell us about your photo, leave a comment. We love to hear from you!

Who are these sisters?

Quick post as it is 5 minutes to 3 in the AM here now!!! Gotta get to bed!!!

Another sister is joining us!!!!!

YAY!!!!!!!!! Our sister Jane is also a scrapper and she wanted in on our blog, too. We couldn't say no to such a pretty face!!! So Jane, welcome!

We have decided on our challenge for Monday, so be watching for it!

Here's a quote for you:

One's sister is a part of one's essential self, an eternal presence of one's heart and soul and memory.

*unknown author
Can you guess who this sister is?

*right-click and look at the properties if you wanna see who it is!!!! hehe!

Quote for today!

Here's a quote I found for today!

"You should never look down on a sister except to pick her up."
Author Unknown

I love this and really feel it means a lot in the scrapbooking world. Our sister scrappers need to be 'picked up' at times and I think the best way to do this is to let them know how much we appreciate them.

So. go to someone's gallery right now and praise them for inspiring you! Leave at least 5 comments in their gallery.

Once you have done this, post a link to your 'sisters' gallery in the comment section of this post and tell us who you've 'picked up' today!

Here's to SISTERHOOD!!!

Tuesday, April 10, 2007

Why the Sister Theme?

Well, I guess the number one obvious reason is that we are all sisters! But...I betcha didn't know that there's another two sisters in the bunch too. So with 5 girls in our family, (and one brother) the theme of sisters just seemed like the most appropriate one to go with!

I believe that sisters share a special bond! Even though we do not live in the same province, we talk with each other everyday (thanks to the internet). We share stories about our families (probably some that our dhs would not like us to share. lol), vent to each other about our daily events, and if something exciting happens, our sisters are the first people we tell! We share common interests, like scrapping, reading, learning, telling stories and spending time with family. The best thing is that we never judge and we always offer support and encouragement to one another! When we are just having a bad day, we know our sisters understand and will be there to uplift our spirits!!

So whether you already have a sister, (or two or three) or if you have no sister at all, this blog is for YOU!! We will make you our scrapping sister!! Big families are so much more fun anyway!! We will celebrate this special bond between sisters and strenghten this bond by sharing it with each one of you!! This blog will help us to do that!! Thank-you for sharing our excitement in this new venture! We are going to have tons of fun!!
Here's to SISTERHOOD!!!

Monday, April 9, 2007

Want to be Part of a Sisterhood?

We are three sisters who share a real love for scrapping!
Would you like to become our sister too?
Look for a new challenge posted each week. Complete the challenge and share it with us!
If you are chosen, we will highlight you throughout your initiation week. There will be certain duties for you to fullfill to become part of our 'Sisterhood of Scrap'. We promise NO hazing, and the initiation process will be fairly simple.
As well, if you complete any Monday challenges your name will go into a draw for our monthly sponsor's prize!
