SISTER Sunday - March 30th

Good Morning everyone! Another snowy, blustery day here in Newfoundland. Where is Spring??!
We have a new SISTER :-) Please welcome Cindy Cordeiro!

Tell us about your family: I have a wonderful husband, Carlos, to whom I’ve been married to for 5 years & beautiful little girl, Juliana, who is 8 months old.

How/Why did you start scrapbooking?
Back in high school I would decorate my photo albums with construction paper. I did that for a few years. A few years ago I took a beginner course at my LSS – Scrapbooking by Design & I’ve since "matured" into a scrapbook addict.

How long have you been scrapbooking? Not really counting my high school years… about 7 years.

What is it about scrapbooking that you really love?
Playing and being creative with all of the embellishments I have collected. I also enjoy sharing my layouts with family & friends especially when they’re in the pictures.

How many hours a week do you scrapbook? This really depends on my little one, but I try to scrapbook for at least 5 hours (in total) throughout the week.

Where do you get your inspiration? Magazines & my journaling.

Describe your scrap space. Do you like/dislike it?
I love my scrapbook space. I have a large table, a laptop & photo printer, & all of my embellishments and chair roll away.

What are your favourite colours to scrapbook with? All shades of blue ~ really all of them, but I tend to gravitate towards the blues.

SKETCH Saturday-Mar 29-Cherie Averill

Good Saturday morning everyone!!!Hope you' re having a great one!!!

Our featured sketch artist today is CHERIE AVERILL!

Here's a little about Cherie:

Hi, I'm Cherie Averill! I was born and raised in Nebraska…And I'm still here living "The Good Life" today! I'm the mother of four active boys (15, 13, 9 and 3) that keep me on my toes. I started designing advertising in 1996 and I'm currently employed at an agricultural magazine. I began scrapbooking about 6 years ago because my mother wanted to create a genealogy scrapbook album. I started drawing sketches a couple years ago because my favorite Yahoo group needed a sketch challenge and I've been at it ever since. I'd be thrilled if you stopped by my sketch blog Sketches-R-Us and said, "Hi!"!

I hope you enjoy using my sketches as much as I love to create them for you!

If scrapping is in your plans today, try the sketch. Also check out her blog. Her sketches are awesome. I used this sketch back in January to create this LO.

TEACHING Tuesday-Mar. 25

We have a great idea from Irene today!!!

STRING ART on your layout!

Draw a circle on the back of your paper; mark it at equal intervals around the circle.
Pierce the marks with a paper piercer or a sewing needle.
Number your holes.
Thread a large needle with embroidery thread.
Tape down the end of your thread near the #1 pierced hole (on the back of the paper).
Bring the thread back up, go thru hole #11 and take the thread thru to the back of the paper.
Pull the thread up to the front thru hole # 2.
Repeat this pattern until you complete the circle.
The thread goes thru each hole twice.
An 8 ½ inch circle with piercings at ¾ inch intervals works best with a 4 x 6 photo.
Changing the intervals or the number of holes skipped provides different looks.

And here's a layout she did using String Art!! Isn't is awesome!!! Great idea! If you try this ,let us know!!! We'd love to see your string art creation! I think this would be great on a card too, don't you think?

TEXT Thursday-Mar. 20th

Hi everyone!Hope you're all enjoying the first day of Spring!!! We are, it's a beautiful sunny day with temps above 0 degrees celcius, so that's a SIGN that Spring is on the way. Now if we could get a few days of warm temps, the 40 -50 cm of snow we got this week just MIGHT start melting!

Karen has a great journaling challenge today!

Create a journalling booklet for your layout. It can be any size, and can be as simple or as elaborate as you like. It just needs to be incorporated into your layout somehow. In the layout "10" I made a little booklet by concertina-folding a widestrip of patterned paper, and securing with ribbon and a charm. The ribbon is attached to the layout and the booklet just slides in and out of the loop formed by the ribbon. Inside, I asked my daughter to write ten things she loves about her dad. The booklet is very simple but contains some very profound journalling.

Thanks, Karen for this wonderful idea! Your layout is beautiful!

Sisterhood...a celebration of the he[ART}

*Please, can you keep a family that we know in your thoughts and prayers. They are a great family of loving, close sisters and brothers. They lost one of their sisters this week in a very tragic way, and will need lots of prayers and good thoughts to help them.

More about Karen....

Describe your scrap space. Do you like/dislike it?
I don’t have my own space… so I have scrap stuff on a corner of the dining room table, on the coffee table, in pizza boxes and in little piles all over the place. I would so love to have my own little room, or even my own dedicated scrap desk.

What are your favourite colours to scrapbook with?
It changes all the time. At the moment I’m doing lots of layouts in blue, green and white. I usually stick to strong, simple colour combinations. I can’t get my head around purple though.

Do you enjoy other crafts and/or hobbies?
I love reading and photography. I enjoy camping and hiking, and gardening.

What scrapbook magazines do you read?
I read most of the magazines, but don’t buy many these days. I’m really lucky I can get most Australian magazines at my local library. I subscribe to Scrapbook Trends, so it’s the magazine I read most often lately.

How thick is your cardstock and paper stash?
I am too embarrassed to measure!! I have one whole pizza box of Bazzill, another pizza box full of Basic Grey, and maybe 6"-8" of others. I am on a use-my-stash drive this year and trying not to buy any new paper till I use up the older ones.

Are you an organized or messy scrapper?
The planning is organised but the execution is definitely messy! Piles of stuff everywhere and leftovers stuffed into empty pizza boxes… I dream of being more organised with my stash.

Anything else you want to share?
Thank you so much for inviting me to be a Sister!

SISTER Sunday - March 16th

Please help me welcome our newest sister. We heard from her yesterday (our sketch artist) and thought we'd keep her here for the rest of the week :-)

Karen Brierley, from Australia

Tell us about your family:
I have been married (10 years this year!) and have a gorgeous 7 year old daughter, who is the inspiration for most of my scrapbooking pages.

How/Why did you start scrapbooking?
I don’t really remember a starting point… as a child I always loved decorating my diaries and albums, and the obsession just grew from there. I have always loved taking photographs and creating albums for my photographs just followed on.

How long have you been scrapbooking?
As a dedicated hobby, probably about three and a half years.

What is it about scrapbooking that you really love?
I love it all… I love that it is a creative outlet for me, a time to relax and escape a bit, and record memories in a way that is meaningful to me. And I love that there are no rules!

How many hours a week do you scrapbook?
Oh… it changes. Maybe six on average? Even when I’m not actually scrapping I’m sketching or thinking scrappy thoughts or chatting at online scrap sites.

How long does it take you to complete a layout?
I’m a slow scrapper. Even a simple layout can take me hours. I start layouts, play around, put them aside, come back to them… I often have several layouts on the go at the same time, so I do titles on a few then stitch on a few while the machine is out… so when I finish one, I finish two or three.

Where do you get your inspiration?
Mostly from my photographs, but also from products and techniques. And I love sketches.
Here is Karen's submission for Challenge 45:

If you get some time, drop by Karen's BLOG and have a look around :-)

Here' s a little about her:

I have been scrapbooking for a little over three years. I scrap as a creative outlet, and to record my memories in a way that is meaningful to me, and to my family. I'm a paper scrapper through and through, but I really enjoy playing with digital elements.I am a fairly low-key scrapper and I've never had any layouts published in magazines.

I am a design team member at two Australian online stores:

Crafting in Style (www.craftinginstyle.com.au) and Scrap with V (www.scrapwithv.com.au).

I also have a blog: http://beingkaren.blogspot.com which is dedicated to my creative life and the things that inspire me. I love blog visitors, please visit any time :)I have always sketched out my ideas in sketches, but it's only recently thatI've begun to share them. I was thrilled to be asked to contribute to the Sisterhood of Scrap blog, and I hope you like my sketch.

And here's her sketch and a layout sample:
Sketch created with Photoshops Elements 4 using digital elements downloaded free the internet:

Do you ever get to the point where all your layouts are looking the same? I challenge you this week to try something new and abandon your favorite tools. The best thing about this challenge is that it gives you an excuse to go shopping!!! Don't want to go shopping? How about you use something that you have had in your stash forever.

March Mystery Envelope

Are you ready for another mystery envelope?? :-)

I have 8 envelopes packaged and ready to go to the first 8 members to email me with your mailing address. NOTE: If you received a mystery envelope last month, please gives others a chance first. You may try again next time.

***** We have 8 players! If you were too late, try again next month :-) *****

Each envelope has the same products - an assortment of patterned paper, ribbon and some smaller embellishments. Your challenge, if you chose to accept an envelope, is to do a layout using at least one of everything in the envelope. You add your own cardstock. You may add other products but please keep it to a minimum. Deadline for layouts is April 11th.

You would then need to scan or photograph your layout and send it (or a link) to me. At the end of the month, we'll display your creations on our blog.Sound like fun?!
I've participated in this sort of challenge before and really enjoyed it. It's neat to see how everyone uses the same items in such different ways/styles.

So, a recap of the DETAILS:

  • Be one of the first 8 people to email me with your mailing address
  • Wait for your envelope to arrive in the mail
  • Create a layout using at least one of each of the supplies
  • Send me a link to your layout, or send a scanned pic by April 11th

Please don't email for an envelope unless you can complete the challenge. By accepting an envelope from us, you are agreeing to us posting your layout on our blog.

We are planning on running this challenge regularly, so, if you don't get picked this month, try again next time!

SISTER Sunday - March 9th

Good Morning, sisters! Hope your "spring ahead" is more springy than us in Newfoundland! We awoke to a blizzard this lovely morning. Uggh! ......and it's supposed to be snowing ALL day! Double UGGH!

On to nicer news -- we have a new sister!

Kendra O’Callaghan

Tell us about your family: I have been married to my husband Jeff for 13 years. We have 2 sons, Eliot is 11 and Nolan is 5. Our daughter Johanna is 8.

How/Why did you start scrapbooking? I started scrapbooking to give my mom an album of my kids professional portraits. They were all in manila folders on top of her microwave…GASP!!! I swore I would never want albums myself but I made such good friends at that first Creative Memories crop that I couldn’t stop with just 1 album

How long have you been scrapbooking? December 2003.

What is it about scrapbooking that you really love? I never considered myself an artist because I thought you had to be able to draw or paint. Using different combinations of papers & embellishments I am able to create works of art that matter to my family and me.

How many hours a week do you scrapbook? I probably average about 10-15 hours a week. Some weeks more, some not at all.

How long does it take you to complete a layout? It really depends on the layout. I’ve put some of my favorites together in 15 minutes. Other times I will spend days on it. I will put a layout away and come back to it later if things don’t feel right.

Where do you get your inspiration? My internet friends, blogs, & sketch sites.

More about Stacey.....

Favorite Snack: Lately, my favorite snack after the kids are in bed is a soft pretzel with nacho cheese for dipping. Yum!

Favorite Drink: Coffee! I probably drink way too much of it.

Favorite Paper: Hmmmm...this is hard. There are so many wonderful papers out there! I just got a bunch of MM Noteworthy paper and I am loving that right now. I usually love everything my MME, too.

Favorite Technique: Inking is by far my favorite thing to do. I ink almost everything! Recently, i have been using a lot of paint as well.

Favorite Embellishment: Probably flowers

Favorite Scrap Tool: Trimmer-couldn’t do a page without it!

Favorite Adhesive: CM tape runner and Photo Tape

What scrapbook magazines do you read? I get Memory Makers and Creating Keepsakes but I will pick up others that look good once in a while at the store.

How thick is your cardstock and paper stash? Well, my cardstock would be a few inches...it’s not all together so it’s hard to estimate. My Bazzill is all together and is about 4 inches thick. I just filled up 72 slots on a paper rack with patterned paper...with most shelves holding more than one sheet. And I have lots I couldn’t fit in there. (Is that a lot??)

Are you an organized or messy scrapper? I am organized to start out with but I get very messy while I am scrapping. I do try to pick things up between layouts (if I didn’t I could never find anything! LOL)

Additional info- I am a creative Team Member at Feeling Scrappy. It’s the first time I have been on any sort of creative team and I am having a blast! I have loved taking classes through the site before joining the team and now I love being part of the planning. I also had the opportunity to teach my very first online class there a couple of weeks ago. It was a monogram card gift set class. We are just starting an awesome sketch class for which I got to design some sketches and can’t wait to share those in the class.
