Pearl says, "I love to add dimension & texture as a quick way to add interest to my work : using pop dots , glitter glue & bling for me!"

CHALLENGE Monday - Week 7

Well, here it is -- week 7 already! We've got a Recipe Challenge today -- and, no, you don't have to worry about cooking! There's no food involved :-)

Use 1 photo. Add 2 pieces of cardstock. Throw in 3 pieces of patterned paper and 4 pieces of ribbon. Embellish to taste.

Now, don't let these numbers hold you back too much. Any good cook knows that a recipe is open to interpretation. You can do the same. You may use 4 pieces of the same ribbon, lots of pieces of 4 different ribbons, whatever! Do the same with the patterned paper and the cardstock. Just have fun with the recipe!

An ORGANIZING Tip -- By Angie

Ribbons add a special touch to scrapbook layouts and altered projects. So many different colors, patterns, textures to choose from! But how does one store them all, especially if they are loose and not on a spool? Stick them in a drawer and, if you are like me, forget that you have them? Here is a fun altered project that is pretty to display in your scrap space and functional!

Here are the supplies you will need:

Empty can with a lid (i.e. baby formula can, coffee can)
Hole punching tool (i.e. eyelet hole punch tool, CropADile)
Sand paper
Xacto knife or razor blade
Craft paint and brushes
Spray adhesive (or any other adhesive)
Scrap paper pieces
Mod Podge
Ribbons

1. To begin, sort the ribbons that you have and decide how you would like to organize them: by brand or color or whatever works for you.


2. Empty the contents of your can and remove any exterior labeling.
   
3. Punch holes in the can lid using your hole punch tool. You may need to make 2 holes side by side to make a wider opening for wider ribbons.
   
4. Use the sandpaper to scuff up the plastic of the lid. This will help the paint “stick” better to it. It may also be helpful, depending on the color of your lid to use a primer on it before painting.


5. Paint the lid using your craft paints and set it aside to dry. (Or, you may choose to cover the lid with pattern papers, too.)
   
6. Spray the outside of the can with spray adhesive. If you do not have spray adhesive you may adhere pattern papers to your can with a strong, permanent scrapbook adhesive.
   
7. Begin sticking your pattern paper pieces on the can. You can do this any way you like. Random, linear, overlapping, straight.
   
8. Use your Xacto knife or razor blade to cut any excess that overlaps the edge of the can.
   
9. Once you have the can completely covered with pattern papers, paint a layer of mod podge over the entire project. This helps to seal the papers firmly to the can. You may use matte or glossy mod podge.
   
10. Allow all to dry.
    
11. Insert your ribbons in to the holes in the lid from the back side and pull through.
    
12. Put all of the ribbon ends down in the can, place the lid, and voila! Organized ribbons in a pretty container for your scrap space!

Describe your scrap space. Do you like/dislike it? I have a room in the basement that is my scrap space/office. I like it, but I don’t love it. It needs to be painted a fun, inspiring color and I need to more clearly designate which area is for work stuff and which areas are for scrapping.

What are your favourite colours to scrapbook with? I like pinks and blues (because I have girls and a boy) but I seem to gravitate towards greens and browns the most.

Do you enjoy other crafts and/or hobbies? I used to cross stitch years ago but it started to bother my hands a bit so I stopped.

What scrapbook magazines do you read? I have subscriptions to Creating Keepsakes, Simple Scrapbooks, and Scrapbooks, etc.

How thick is your cardstock and paper stash? Too thick to measure! I hoard paper like there is no tomorrow!

Are you an organized or messy scrapper? Messy while I am scrapping (I am what I call a “spreader”) but organized in between projects. I clean up and put back every tool, etc. in its proper place before starting the next project.

What does Angie really LOVE about scrapbooking?

We asked Angie some questions about why she scrapbooks and what the process is like for her.

How/Why did you start scrapbooking? I postponed starting scrapbooking because I knew once I started that it would take all of my time and money. (am I psychic or what?) When my son was almost a year old, I decided I should start. A friend of mine showed me her Creative Memories stuff and it was all over from there.

How long have you been scrapbooking? Just over 2 years.
What is it about scrapbooking that you really love? I love recording my feelings in my journaling so that one day my children and grandchildren and great- grandchildren will have some insight in to who I am. I also love the artistic escape it allows me to have. I like to use the other side of my brain after a long day of work and taking care of children.

How many hours a week do you scrapbook? Anywhere from 4 to 14. It just depends on the week, how much is going on with the kids and work, and how exhausted I am.

How long does it take you to complete a layout? It depends. If I have an idea in mind, I can sometimes whip one out in an hour. If I don’t have a set idea, sometimes it can take days of moving, rearranging, walking away, and coming back to it.

Where do you get your inspiration? Of course from my children, but I really like to pull from fabric designs, magazine/catalog layouts, and sometimes even structural architecture.

TEXT Thursday-Write a letter

Write a letter to a loved one. Not just a quick "hi, how ya doing,miss ya" . No, sit and think your letter through and write about at least five things you want to tell that person. (ex. 5 things you love about them, 5 moments when you were proud of them, etc.)
You can email it,of course, but how wonderful would it be for that person to receive a real "handwritten" letter from you in the mail! Think about it. That's your challenge for today. Oh, and how about fancying up the letter with some doodling! Fun stuff!

Welcome to another WEB Wednesday! Thought I'd share a few links with you today. I've been busy surfing through blogs lately -- one blog leads me to another..... to another.... to another... and on I go :-)

• Here's a FABULOUS Blog for anyone interested in hybrid or digital scrapping. Check out Sprague Lab. Jessica shares Photoshop tutorials every Friday. There's lots to see and do at this site!
  
• I happened upon this wonderful, inspiring site, Lessons From the Scrapbook Page. I watched a video reminding us women to put photos of OURSELVES in our scrapbooks. The video is by Tasra Dawson, author of "Real Women Scrap". Watch the video -- you'll be glad you did!
  
• For anyone interested in getting their layouts published, I found this article by Julie Ann Shahin to be very informative. Julie also has a blog called Everyday Digital Scrapbooking which has digital tutorials.
  
• Do you like doing layouts with more than one photo! Check out Sketches by Suzy! Lots of FAB sketches -- most of them are 2-pagers. Terrific site!
  
• And lastly....... you can never have TOO many fonts! Check ScrapNfonts for more fonts than you can imagine! There are over 160 FREE fonts, PLUS others that you can purchase very inexpensively. How many fonts do you have?

TEACHING Tuesday - Week 6

Do you want a way to make your chipboard (or any other kind of lettering) go a little bit further? Here's a little tip that I use often!

When you get a new package of letters, take out one FULL set right away and store them in 'an easy to get to' place. Use the remainder of the letters on your LOs and projects over and over again by tracing them!!

Here's a LO I created by tracing my Heidi Swapp ghost letters for the title!

The fun part is that you will eventually have a variety of fonts and sizes of lettering to use over and over again!! Give it a try and share with us what you come up with!!

Sister of the Week {May 20-26}

A BIG welcome to Angie as our next sister! We are so pleased to showcase Angie's talent and to learn from her.

Home: Georgia

Tell us about your family: I am married to a great guy (most of the time J) and we have a 3 year old son and twin girls who are almost 1. My extended family all live away from us but my in-laws live right around the corner from us. Many would say this might be a negative thing but it is actually great. They are wonderful people!

Favorite Snack: Anything chocolate!!!

Favorite Drink: Non-alcoholic-Dr. Pepper Alcohol-Margaritas

Favorite Paper: I love anything My Mind’s Eye and I really like KI Memories, too.

Favorite Technique: I ink everything. I have tried to stop but it just looks so “undone”.

Favorite Embellishment: I really like my brads and eyelets. I seem to use them a lot on layouts.
Favorite Scrap Tool: Can’t live without my Doodlebug Rub-on Tool. No popsicle sticks for me anymore!

Favorite Adhesive: I use Herma Dotto repositionable on almost every project. ( I am an indecisive scrapperJ) I also love glue dots!

Let's learn some more about LISA!

What are your favourite colours to scrapbook with?
This is tough!! I love pink and black but with both sexes of children I find I have to deal with all colors. My daughter like purple so she would have me use in everything, one son likes blue and the other likes green and hates blue on any of his pages. So with this in mind and they are my best critics. I try to make layouts that they like and try to ask for their input in every page I do This way it makes them feel like they are helping with our memories

Where do you scrapbook and when?
I scrapbook when I can, in between everything else

Are you an organized or messy scrapper?
I don’t know if I am organized, I try to put things away but find I don’t use them nor know what I have when I want something. I clean everything up when I am done a page but during the process everything is as messy as ever!!

How do you organize your supplies?
I try to organize by keeping thing grouped together but find embellishments the hardest to try to organize. Any suggestions would be great!

Describe your scrap space. Do you like/dislike it?
I scrap in our family room. It is an open space with four desks each with a computer. My kids each have their own and usually we are in one room doing our own thing. We also have the TV and sometimes have everything going on at once its sometimes loud and hard to concentrate but in our own way enjoying out time together.

Anything else you want to share?
I enjoy Scrapbooking to pass on memories for my children I hope they can enjoy them as they grow and remember the moments we share so they pass this on to their families, We are a very close family and hopefully these traditions will continue as now a days its tough for children and families to be together and enjoy family time that seems to be diminishing.

FOTO Friday - Week 5

I've got a GREAT challenge for you today!

I was looking through some of my mom's older photos and found this one of Deanne and I. What I thought was so cool was the car behind us. Now I know my mom was probably not thinking about the car -- she just wanted a picture of her cute girls (even if they are wearing ugly socks, again!) LOL!




It got me thinking that in 20-30 years, the look of our cars/vans can change so much. I'm sure that when my children are grown, they will get a kick out of how "different" our van was compared to theirs.

So, snap some pictures of your vehicle, and don't forget to get some close-ups. If you're like me, you'll want to give it a good cleaning first! When you've done that, create a page or two showcasing the details of your vehicle. Your kids will thank you for it later :-)

TEXT Thursday - Week 5

Happy Thursday! It's almost the weekend (and a LONG one for us Canadians)!

Your challenge today is to use hidden journaling on a layout.

Sometimes, you just don't want EVERYONE reading your journaling. Making it hidden ensures that the story/feeling/emotion is preserved; but it just tucks it away for the intended reader.



Other times, you may have so many photos on your layout that there's no where to add your journaling.

How/Why did you start Scrapbooking?
I started when a friend of my sons Mom invited me to a CM class That was about 5 years ago and then about a year ago I realized that there was more out there and started to add color to my pages.

How long have you been Scrapbooking?
For about 5 years I have stamped for roughly as long and enjoying making cards and altering projects.

What is it about Scrapbooking that you really love?
I like telling the story and bringing it to life

What scrapbook magazines do you read?
Creating Keepsakes and Scrapbooks, Etc.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I love looking at others layouts and reading blogs LOL even though I have yet to start one

Do you enjoy other crafts and/or hobbies?
With three kids and working, it’s hard enough to find the time to get what I do get done

How many hours a week do you scrapbook?
I would say only about 2-6 hrs a week and this doing in shifts

How long does it take you to complete a layout?
My goal is trying to do one a week, I started this in January, so far I have kept my goal and hope to do this all year I love the challenge idea as it inspires you to create an new layout plus the fact you have a week to get it done.

TEACHING Tuesday - Week 5

Today's technique comes from our sister, Lisa. She writes:

"Inking is a favorite technique of mine. It is easy to use and once you start you'll never stop.I love using the smaller style such as cat's eyes in smaller areas and the larger pads for full stamped images. I love it and I ink everything! Not only can you stamp images, but it is good for inking edges of cardstock, photo mats, embellishments, and chipboard. Just about anything; I love using it on the tips of the flowers as well.

What some people don't know is that it can make your pictures "POP" just try inking around your actual photo. This will make the photo stand out with an added bit of 3-D layer effect.Try this out on your next layout and see the difference it can make."

I was thinking that we should all send a card of thanks to a "sister" ( mom, aunt, cousin, friend, online friend, sister-in-law, sister...) who has been an inspiration to us lately. And it doesn't necessarily have to be for something scrapbook-related. I want you to think of someone to make a card for and let them know how much you appreciate them and how they have inspired you. If you do this, leave us a comment in this post to say you have made a card and sent it and we'll put your name in for draw for a little RAK from us. FOTO Friday-Week 4

Spring is all about NEW life.So today ,go outside and take a few photos of some NEW life growing around you.

Here's a photo I took on May 6th, after we got a sprinkling of snow overnight, which is not unusual for Newfoundland! We have frost this morning for goodness sake!

TEXT Thursday - Week 4

Just a simple challenge today :-)

We may get 'stuck in a rut' with our journaling on layouts - journaling in the corner or on a tag - but sometimes we need to shake it up a bit and try something different!

How about journaling in a shape, or around something, like a flower or other embellishment? You can also journal around a photo or in a curvy line.

In this example, I journaled in a curvy line.


For this layout, I added facts about frogs around the patterned paper.


So, try something new with journaling today. Feel free to post a link to something you have created that shows unique journaling. We'd love to see it!

And...like we promised...here's a little more about Sister of the Week...LOIS!!

Favorite Adhesive: Scotch quick dry adhesive is the one I rely on for mostly everything…except for the little sticky tabs I use on my pictures. I also have found Aleene’s Jewelry & Metal glue holds just about anything in the way of an embellishment.

How thick is your cardstock and paper stash? I would guess about 2 feet high if stacked but at this moment it is all over in various storage containers, drawers and files!

How/Why did you start scrapbooking? I have been playing around with my family history on the genealogy sites and have amassed a major library of information so, my intention has been to start making myself albums of the pictures in relation to that and journalize with some of the history. I haven’t actually gotten my own family album done but have been able to successfully side-track myself with everything else, like my husband’s family, grandchildren, etc. till I can do mine perfectly with ‘just the perfect paper’!

How long have you been scrapbooking? I have been scrapbooking for about two years…my daughter got me going seriously about then. I did her baby album when I first started and now I realize I will have to do it over again because it is so plain…you know how it is when you first start…you’re cheap…use lots of stickers and just want to get those pictures on the pages!

What is it about scrapbooking that you really love?
I love to create…I have always been a bit of a crafter but I don’t paint portraits, landscapes or any of that. I did become a porcelain doll maker and have a kiln and all of that but you can only make so much ‘stuff’. Scrapbooking speaks to that part of me that wants to be an artist…so I make my feeble attempts and enjoy myself doing so!

What scrapbook magazines do you read? I haven’t read any…but have looked through some technique books on occasion. I will probably try Canadian Scrapbooker soon.

Where do you get your inspiration? I get inspiration from some of the pictures I’ve taken…and sometimes just get nutty and do whatever comes into my head…there have been a few layouts done during a weekend crop when I have been up for a couple of days so you can imagine!

Teaching Tuesday-Week 4

Would you like a little "Dip" for that "Chip"board??

I bet you all have some chipboard in your stash of scrapping goodies that you don't know what to do with-monograms, hearts, flowers, buckles, tags, scrolls to name just some! Seeing that this week's challenge is to use chipboard, why not pull out some of that "undressed" chipboard, dip into your scrap collection and have fun embellishing.

There are countless ways to make your pieces "delicious" and add texture and bling to your layouts, cards and altered projects!

Here are just a few things to dip into-
~Paint! Grab the perfect shades of paint! Dip that brush into your paint and add a splash of wonderful to your naked chipboard! Tip: Chipboard is pourous and paint will cause the chipboard to buckle so you should paint both sides.
~Cover them with patterned paper or cardstock! For an added touch of an "aged" look, sand the edges.
~ How about adding INK directly on to the raw chipboard! And then, placing another "script" stamp pattern over the top of that! Awesome look!
~Fabric! Check through your stuff for a great piece of fabric and place it on top of your chipboard. For added texture, leave the edges somewhat jagged and torn and ink the edges!
~Flowers, brads, jewels are neat on a piece of chipboard as well! Yum!
~ Who doesn't like to dip into the bling, bling! Cover your chipboard with glue and sprinkle glitter all over it!!! Wow!!! Instant sparkle. Let it dry and you are ready to add your chipboard to your piece of artwork!
~ Ribbon, twill, ricrac, or fibres tied on your chipboard! Amazing look!

So, there you have it! Some "dip" for your "chip"board! Have fun "dipping" into your stash and coming up with your own ways of fancying up that raw, naked, undressed chipboard! Oh and remember, double-dipping IS allowed!!!! Enjoy!

And Lois has some wonderful tips for everyone as well!

She says... "My favourite technique lately has been paint and crackle. The first time I used this was for a challenge on Pick of The Patch where I had to make my own paper. I painted crackle glaze (available in any craft store) over brown cardstock and let it dry…then I painted on a paint that was very light in color so the brown would show through the cracks. After it all dried I lightly sanded the whole thing. I loved how it turned out and have been using it a lot. You can use any color under the crackle but you have to use an opposite color on top or you won’t see the cracks very well. It looks great on chipboard pieces too."

And here's another tip..."I have been making art cards lately and have been using plain cardboard, (the free kind that comes as backing for things in packages) painted and using the crackle technique, then inking the edges and making heritage type cards. You can use up a lot of bits of leftover paper and small embellishments and still have something nice to give or trade away. I was at Dragonfly Scrapbooking yesterday showing my friend Colleen these cards…she loved the idea and asked me if I wanted to co-ordinate trading…so maybe I will!"

Tell us about your family (include your pets!) :I have a blended family of four…a second marriage brought me a great husband with his two children and we have four grandchildren. Nancy our cat thinks she is child 5 and is as spoiled as our grandchildren!

Favorite Snack: Anything chocolate and Lime taco chips.

Favorite Drink: Skim milk vanilla latte or just plain old strong French roast coffee…sipped through a straw.

Favorite Paper: Well, that is really a tough one…but the Basic Grey papers are so far the ones I love the most…you can tell…I just can’t cut into most of them and I have about 200 sheets! Then there is the Scrapbook Walls papers…they are a close second on my list.

Favorite Technique: Lately I have been using a crackle medium and paint to alter my chipboard and sometimes my cardstock.

Favorite Embellishment: My favourite embellishment would have to be buttons…and flowers…you can probably tell by my layouts, I went flower crazy for awhile.

Favorite Scrap Tool: My tweezers…I would be lost without them…when the fingers fail, the tweezers usually do the job!

TEXT Thursday-Week 3:Childhood games

Journal about, blog about, do a layout about, or comment here on some of the childhood games you enjoyed.

I played some great indoor and outdoor games, some had rules but most were played using our "imagination".

We had so much fun as children. With 6 kids you could play a lot of stuff and never get bored. I don't know if we EVER breathed the words that we were bored (but it's something I hear my boys say all the time!)

Indoor games were activities such as SCHOOL, our favorite! The DAY school was out for the summer, we pulled all our supplies out and played school. I loved being the teacher. (I guess that's why I'm a teacher now!) Another fun activity was CHURCH. There were enough of us to have a pastor, "organist" and congregation, complete with crying and screaming babies! Funny thing about it though, most times we stopped the game before the preaching! I guess none of us wanted to take on the responsibility to instill all those Biblical teachings on the others. But we had testimony services and sang hymns. We also enjoyed playing RESTAURANT. We would take "orders" and then go to the kitchen and prepare the "meals" for our customers.

Outdoors was as exciting! Playing in our "copyhouses" was the BEST! Our dad always had a "mini- house" made for us and we would spend hours playing "house" in it. Hide-and-Seek, Tag, and Red Rover were always high on the list as games we HAD to play when we were outside. Others like Hopscotch, I Declare War, Red Light-Green Light, Simon Says, Mother May I, BINGO, Marbles were perfect for when we all got together with our friends.

I could go on, but maybe Carla, Jane and Susan can tell you some more about the games they can remember playing.

WEB Wednesday - Week 3

We've got a few websites to share with you today.

One of Jean's recent favorites is Craft TV Weekly. Jean says, " I learned of this site thru a make & take hosted at Scrap Galaxy for the Mini March Online Crop --so many fantastic projects and tips. I am sure there are many who have been visiting this site for a long time...but if you are new to the Scrapbook and craft Cyber world, this is such a fantastic site with many projects and helpful ideas!

Another great scrappy site is Printables 4 Scrapbooking. Lots of FREE printables, you'll need some time to look through this site! She has posted some ideas for Mother's Day. Take a look!

I've also been looking through the "Top Scrap Blogs" and I must say that I am impressed with all the fabulous scrapbooking blogs out there! One that I keep returning to is "Stampin' When I Can". Great site that will bring you on a journey through MANY other wonderful blogs, where you can meet so many super ladies! Check it out!

TEACHING Tuesday - Week 3

Wow!! Where did April go? I really cannot believe it is May already!!

Today's Tip comes from our SISTER of the WEEK, Jean Pennington!! She has an awesome storage idea for ribbon! Here's what she says!!

I am always looking for new and inexpensive ideas for storing my Scrapbook products. One of my favorite items are Cigar boxes..I discovered that when you purchase Basic Grey Ribbon they come in sturdy plastic containers with each ribbon setting in it's own special groove.. I find them hard to store if kept in the original packaging, but if you fully open up the packaging and using your exacto knife trim off all sides, you have storage for an additional 16 mini spools of ribbon for a total of 24 ribbons that fit nicely into cigar boxes and keep your ribbon from rolling around or getting tangled....
